Dose: One drop Q 3 hours (maximum 6 drops/day per eye) |
Comments: Polymyxin B
sulfate-Trimethoprim is an ophthalmic preparation used to treat conjunctivitis due to
susceptible organisms. Trimethoprim is active against most Staph. aureus, Staph.
epidermidis, Streptococci, and a variety of gram negative bacilli. Polymyxin is active
against many gram negative bacilli including virtually all strains of H. influenza
and Pseudomonas. Sterile antimicrobial solution for topical ophthalmic use. Avoid
contaminating the tip of the applicator with material from eye, fingers, or other
source. Generally this combination is used if an infection fails to respond to
erythromycin or Neosporin. Safety and effectiveness below the age of two months has not
been established by the manufacturer. |
Toxicity: Overgrowth of resistant organisms including fungi with prolonged use or local sensitivity reactions are possible but are rare in infants. The latter is less likely with this preparation. |
Preparation: Polymyxin B sulfate-Trimethoprim (Polytrim) ophthalmic solution is available in a 10 ml dropper bottle. Store at room temperature and protect from light. Discard, if tip becomes contaminated. |
