Comments:  Sodium sulfacetamide is an ophthalmic preparation used to treat conjunctivits due to susceptible organisms.  It is bacteriostatic against gram positive and gram negative organisms including strep. pneumoniae and viridans, Staph. aureus, E. coli, H. influenza, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, and Enterobacter species. It is incompatible with silver-containing preparations. Non susceptible organisms may proliferate (such as fungi) during use. Apply the ointment 4 to 5 times daily.  Apply the drops every 4 hours. Avoid contaminating the tip of the applicator with material from eye, fingers, or other source.

Toxicity: Overgrowth of resistant organisms with prolonged use or local sensitivity reactions are possible but are rare in infants, especially the latter. Transient irritation, burning, or stinging may occur, as well as localized swelling and erythema. If these signs develop, they should resolve upon discontinuing the preparation and it should be avoided in the future.   There is one reported case of an adult developing Stevens-Johnson syndrome while using the preparation (had a prior bullous drug reaction following an orally administered sulfonamide.
