Spironolactone with hydrochlorothiazide (Aldactazide)

Comments: Spironolactone and hydrochlorothiazide (Aldactazide) is a combination of diuretics. The combination seeks to improve the efficacy of the two while decreasing the adverse effects. | Toxicity: The most common side effects when using the individual diuretics are hypokalemia with hydrochlorothiazide and hyponatremia, hyperkalemia, and metabolic acidosis with spironolactone. See adverse effects associated with spironolactone and hydrochlorothiazide. |
Preparation: To prepare a 5 mg/ml concentration of Aldactazide use five (5)
25 mg tablets of Aldactazide. Remove tablet coating using a damp paper towel. Then,
triturate the tablet in a mortar and pestle until a fine powder is obtained. Add 25 ml of
simple syrup in small amounts, using it to evenly suspend and wash all of the drug out of
the mortar into a 1 oz amber bottle. Label the bottle with drug, strength, date, time,
initials, SHAKE WELL, REFRIGERATE, and STABILITY of 60 days. |
