Sucrose
Dose: up to 2 ml/kg placed on pacifier or slowly injected into the oral cavity |
Comments: Sucrose (in concentrations ranging form 12.5% to 50%) has been used as an analgesic agent to decrease nocioceptive reactions in newborns. The anti-nocioceptive properties of sucrose are thought to be due to an endogenous opioid release mediated by gustatory stimulation i.e., taste. It appears to be most effective in relieving pain due to minor procedures such as blood drawing or vaccinations. It should not be used alone for circumcisions. Further comments on sucrose.
